Morro Rock

On our last trip to the Morro Bay area we had a great view of the Morro Rock and found out a couple of facts about it! I have researched it further and thought I would share what I found out with you! :)

Morro Rock is a 581-foot tall volcanic plug just off-shore in Morro Bay. (A volcanic plug is the result of an active volcano's lava hardening over the vent of the volcano:)

It was quarried on and off from 1889 to 1963; in 1966 a petition was circulated to stop the quarrying.

Here is a photo from 1894, right when the quarrying started:

Here is a photo after the quarrying stopped:

Morro Bay has always been a favorite place for our family since my Great-Grandmother owned a home there with a view of the rock, and my Mother went there many times as a child. :)

Until next time! ;)

The Names of Jerusalem

When in my daily Bible reading, I noticed a small chart on the side that listed a few of the names of Jerusalem. I found it interesting, and I thought I would share a few of them with you! I have researched a few more names, their meanings, and Scripture references that I will also share. :)

Jerusalem means:

1) The City of Peace

2) The City of the Great King

"Beautiful in elevation, the joy of the whole earth, is Mount Zion in the far north, The City of the Great King." ~ Psalm 48:2

"I say to you, make no oath at all, either by heaven,...Or by the earth,... Or by Jerusalem, for it is The City of the Great King." ~ Matthew 5:34-35

3) The City of Our God

"Great is the LORD, and greatly to be praised, and the City of Our God, His holy mountain."
~Psalm 48:1

"With the east wind You break the ships of Tarshish. As we have heard, so we have seen in The City of the LORD of Hosts, in the City of Our God; God will establish her forever." ~ Psalm 48:7-8

4) The City of the LORD of Hosts

Psalm 48:8 (shown above)

5) Salem, which means Peace

"God is known in Judah; His name is great in Israel. His tabernacle is in Salem; His dwelling place also is in Zion." ~Psalm 76:1-2

6) The City of Righteousness

"I will restore your judges as at the first, and your counselors as at the beginning after that you will be called The City of Righteousness, a faithful city." ~ Isaiah 1:26

7) Ariel, which means Lion of God

"Woe, O Ariel, Ariel the city where David once camped!" ~Isaiah 29:1

8) The Holy City

"Awake, awake, clothe yourself in your strength, O Zion; clothe yourself in your beautiful garments, O Jerusalem, The Holy City." ~ Isaiah 52:1

9) The Throne of the LORD

"At that time they will call Jerusalem 'The Throne of the LORD', and all the nations will gather to it." ~ Jeremiah 3:17

10) The LORD is Our Righteousness

"In those days Judah will be saved and Jerusalem will dwell in safety; and this is the name by which she will be called: The LORD is Our Righteousness." ~Jeremiah 33:16

11)  The City of Truth

"Jerusalem will be called the City of Truth, and the mountain of the LORD of Hosts will be called the Holy Mountain." ~Zechariah 8:3

12) Holy Mountain

Zechariah 8:3 (shown above)

13) Zion

Some say Zion refers to Jerusalem, where others say it refers to Israel.

"The ransomed of the LORD shall return and come to Zion with singing; everlasting joy shall be upon their heads; they shall obtain gladness and joy, and sorrow and sighing shall flee away." ~Isaiah 35:10

Although these are not all the names of Jerusalem, I enjoyed my study, and I hope you do too! :)

Big Sur!!

We just went on a four-day trip to Big Sur followed by the Morro Bay area! While we were there, we went to Pfeiffer Beach, which has purple sand. :) I have been researching what causes the sand to be purple! So here are a few things I learned:

Sand can be anywhere from white, green, pink, orange, purple, and black; but only two beaches in the world--including Pfeiffer Beach--are purple.

Pfeiffer Beach is considered one of the nine most colorful beaches in the world!

Not all the sand on the beach is purple, but the sand that is purple is caused by the quartz and manganese garnet in the hills surrounding the beach, which gets washed down to the ocean, turning the sand a bright purple color. Changing daily, the sand can glint with shades of violet, lavender, royal purple, ruby red, or pink.

Purple sand is most common after winter storms.

Offshore, Pfeiffer Beach also contains many large purple rocks that contribute to the beach's extraordinary coloration. :) The further north you go, the more prominent the purple sand becomes.

That's all I have on the sand! :)

This is a photo we took at Pfeiffer Beach; although it doesn't show the purple sand, I really like it! :) ;)
Running with Leopold!! ;)

I really enjoyed learning about the sand, and I hope you do too!! :)

Our God truly is an awesome God!!

"You have made them...the birds of the heavens, the fish of the sea, whatever passes through the paths of the seas. O, LORD, our Lord, How majestic is Your name in all the earth!"
~Psalm 8: 5&8-9
